Customer Reviews

Gentle magnesium, great for brain healthI like this magnesium. I take it when I feel like I'm hitting that 4:00 pm slump. This smooths out my early evening and I feel more clear and focused. They don't really give me energy... But more if a clear sense of calm. They don't seem to affect me that much in other ways. They are gentle. I don't have a laxative effect from them at all. I think overall they are good for a specialised magnesium supplement that is made for brain health. They do feel somewhat nuero-protective, and help balance my brain chemistry. 5I also started taking an awesome liver support supplement around the same timeWeirdly, I felt a very noticeable improvement in mood when taking this. I also started taking an awesome liver support supplement around the same time. But when I ran out of the magtein, the mood lift wasn't noticeable. I only did one bottle of 45 and I took one capsule twice a day. I am reordering the 90 ct since it's a better value. As far as an amazing magnesium for muscles and pain, I used to take Jigsaw's magnesium malate time release formula and I can't recommend it highly enough. I have to say that I feel no difference in my muscles from this type of magnesium--the magtein. But I no longer have a really achy body like I did a few years ago, and I find it difficult to swallow Jigsaw's larger tablets due to thyroid issues. These capsules are easier for me to swallow, and I feel like they are doing something lovely for my brain chemistry. 5May be helping, but can't be certainMy wife started taking this in January and has been on it for 5 months. She has been diagnosed with 'mild cognitive impairment' by her neurologist. She has some difficulty remembering things. Prior to starting the Magtein she was already taking Aricept and an antidepressant to help with the memory issue. Since adding Magtein to the mix it's difficult to tell if it has had an effect. I can definitely say that it hasn't hurt. Most of the time she seems better, but occasionally she still has lapses. She wants to continue taking it so we're sticking with it. It hasn't helped her sleep better so she is taking Valerian Root for that problem. So the bottom line is that I'm neutral on it at this time.UPDATE on 9-9-15:Magtein may or may not be doing any good for my wife's MCI after 8 months, but she has started taking Prevagen and Turmeric so we decided to cut out one of the supplements to avoid having to take so many pills. She just stopped taking the Magtein a few days ago. I think she is at least stable and maybe a bit better over the last month or so (since starting the Prevagen). It's not easy to tell sometimes. With so many pills you don't know which ones are making a difference. If she starts to decline then we'll go back to the Magtein. 3Updated Working well nowI've been taking some form of magnesium for years now. I was really excited after reading about this because I suffer from migraines and thought this might help. I've taken it about 5 days and it just makes me feel really weird. Maybe my magnesium is low in my brain and cns and its some sort of reaction to getting magnesium in there. I felt very awake on it, so that was nice, but also emotional and jitterish. Not like caffeine jitters. Maybe I just haven't taken it long enough for the kinks to work out. It also causes me some heartburn which I wasn't expecting. Going to give it more time and see if things improve, but at this point it's not the panacea I was hoping for.****update***I took a break from this for a couple weeks and started back up with 1/2 the capsule. I am (now) loving it! I don t have the jittery feeling any longer and it doesn t seem to be causing the heartburn issue as much. It just makes me feel good. I feel awake and calm. I don t seem as fatigued or overwhelmed by physical or mental tasks. I actually look forward to taking this because of how good it makes me feel all over. But it s not an overwhelming jolt of feel good, but a subtle yet noticeable sense of well-being. 5Very goodA little google research will turn up a number of articles alleging that 70-80% of Americans are now deficient in magnesium, due to changes in diet (less consumption of leafy green vegetables, etc.) and so-called "corporate farming methods" that have depleted the soil of this essential mineral. There are a number of critical benefits to supplementing with magnesium, which including bone health, by balancing out calcium (there are plenty of studies now showing that calcium can't be absorbed properly without magnesium), moderating heart and blood pressure risks, neurological - improving sleep and concentration, preventing migraines, etc. It's quite a list. I started getting magnesium for our household to address some anxiety and restlessness issues, as well as some muscle cramps, and it _appears_ that the supplements we've used have had the desired effect. You can find the NIH fact sheet on magnesium linked here:http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Magnesium-HealthProfessional/Turning to this supplement: there are various types of magnesium supplements that you can buy, including magnesium oxide (low bioavailability), magnesium sulfate (think Epsom salts), magnesium citrate (decent bioavailability), magnesium bisglycinate (high bioavailability) and magnesiums l-threonate.Of these types, I've used bisglycinate (as in the Viva labs pills and others) because of its high bioavailability and source naturals l-threonate because of its documented neurological benefits in improving brain function. I tend to steer away from others because, despite being less costly, they are also less effective. You get what you pay for, to a degree. I certainly would never consider a magnesium oxide supplement, as in my opinion that's basically a waste of money. The Viva Labs magnesium comes in the form of 240 decently large, but readily swollowable, chelated tablets. They're somewhat larger than the Source Naturals L-Threonate capsules that I'm currently taking, and the Viva Labs tablets are bit harder to get down, but not so large that it's a problem for me. I can't tell the difference when I switch between them, to be honest. That said, when I started taking the Magtein, I found I slept much better and started having some fairly intense dreams - this has continued while taking the Viva Labs magnesium, so I assume the absorbtion is at least somewhat comparable. As far as price - the Magtein is far more expensive then Viva Labs chelated magnesium, although I think it's the cheapest of the L-threonate magnesiums - currently listed at $21.69 for 90 capsules, or 24 cents each. The suggested use is 2 in the am and 1 at night - 3/day or 72 cents a day.Viva Labs is listed at $18.99 for 240 tablets, or approximately 8 cents each. the suggested use is 2 tablets twice a day, for a cost of almost $.32/day.Simply put, the Viva Labs magnesium costs less than half of the Source Naturals L-Threonate magnesium. That doesn't mean it's necessarily the right choice - I think everyone should do a little research and also decide exactly what they are trying to accomplish. Source Naturals L-Threonate might be the right choice to help with memory and neurological issues - Viva labs might be desirable for coronary issues, muscle relaxation, and teeth and bones. Regardless, I suspect both these products work well, albeit possibly to different degrees, and both of these products are worthy of consideration. 4Helps brain function, memory and mood a lotQuality product though I do wish this brand would ditch the magnesium stearate.Seems to be helping my thinking and mood. I also take magnesium glycinate for my muscle and nerve damage and restless leg. Both have helped anxiety a lot as well.I am adding a cortisol calm product next and had added last month two types of enzymes with meals 1 that has oxbile. Finally starting to feel happy and not sick, tired, bloated, brain fogged and miserable. 5Better brain function I think, but possibly causing an eye twitchI supplemented with MgCl for some time as well as a host of other nutrients. When I started taking Magtein, I think it caused an eye twitch. At first I thought this was the Iodine supplement and discontinued that, but no change. I think the Magtein is helping deal with some mercury accumulation and that is causing the eye twitch. For example, I can smell much better lately. I can also focus better, when I want to. The eye twitch is gradually going away. Perhaps the alpha-lipoic acid supplement I've taken daily for the last year or more, which crosses the blood brain barrier and helps grab mercury, is resulting in some accumulation, that the magnesium is knocking loose?Anyone else getting an eye twitch? 5I can't argue with success. As is noted above, Magnesium L-threonate penetrates the blood-brain barrier, and hence it can purportedly support cognitive function and brain health. This makes the magnesium in magtein distinct from many others on the market, including magnesium oxide (poor bioavailability), as well as magnesium chloride, lactate, and aspartate, which have better bioavailability but which also don't penetrate the blood-brain barrier.Magnesium is an important part of everyone's diet, but corporate farming methods have depleted its presence in soil, and hence, in our diets. It appears somewhere from 60-80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, and low magnesium levels are associated with a variety of conditions, including hypertension and heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and migraine headaches, among others. We landed upon magnesium l-threonate because magnesium is noted to have calming properties. Our son is a bit hyper - so after finding out about the benefits of magnesium, we found out about l-threonate and then researched different brands. On a weighted assessment, Megtein is the cheapest l-threonate product currently on the market, so our decision was pretty easy.I can't say if it was a coincidence, but shortly after starting on the Magtein, my son's reports from school improved dramatically. He was more focused, and his classroom performance improved correspondingly. He went from being the kid the teacher dreaded to being one she obviously, really liked. It was a stunning turn-around. The pills aren't huge, and he has no problem swallowing them. Was it solely due to the Magtein? I can't say - we also started him on probiotics, and we gave him a good vitamin K and D supplement as well, but something has changed. And I'm not going to mess with success, so he'll be on the Magtein for a while.I've been taking the Magtein as well - I can say it causes me to have more dreams and deeper, more restful sleep than I've had previously. In all, I'm a huge Magtein fan, and will remain so. 5Really like this type of magnesiumReally like this type of magnesium. I was taking Source Naturals Magnesium Malate for quite a while and I really noticed a difference after switching over to the Magtein type. Clearer thinking and much better sleep. 5AWESOME STUFF!MY FAVORITE FORM OF MAGNESIUM. I THINK I HAVE TRIED THEM ALL. I TAKE IT AT NIGHT BECAUSE IT DOES RELAX ME QUITE A BIT. I FEEL REFRESHED IN THE MORNING AND NOTICED LESS OF A FOGGY FEELING WITH THE ABILITY TO RECALL INFORMATION A LITTLE FASTER. I THINK IT HELPS ME SLEEP A LITTLE BETTER SO IM A LITTLE QUICKER THINKING THE NEXT DAY. 5
