Light licorice flavorThis is a Dutch brand and they don't seem to have that American desire to produce diabetes with every food on the market. The Dutch do like salty licorice, which must be a holdover from the time when everything was preserved in salt. It is a very good compromise between not too sweet and not too salty, hard to find in an age where even pizza sauce is full of sugar.The flavor is light, not overwhelming. I was looking for the same flavor mix, but with a more knock-your-socks-off licorice flavor like the old dime store jar American brands but this is the best I've seen in decades. I suppose the modern licorice lover must take what they can get. Five stars is a comparison with what else is available, though if this were 1960 this would only be 4 stars.5Exactly what I was searching for!I was looking for a certain taste, texture and consistency that I remember finding in a candy store growing up in Princeton, NJ in the 1970s. The candy store had "Licorice drops" that were thick and rich and hard to chew but very satisfyingly. I ordered everything else on Amazon before trying these licorice coins. These are EXACTLY what I was looking for in terms of chewability (they last at least five minutes in the mouth no matter how much you try to chew it.). Not too nasty a taste. Just the real licorice I was searching for.5Great Dutch Licorice!It is very difficult to find decent licorice in the U.S. Most Americans don't like licorice, and with good cause. The truth is that american licorice is made with very low standards and significantly inferior ingredients. So, of course it is not a popular candy.But decent licorice does exist. In my humble opinion Dutch licorice is the best. It is made with the finest ingredients (Arabic gum instead of wheat flour) and with a pinch of salt. It comes in literally thousands of varieties. The British also make decent licorice candy. And perhaps we can add the Finnish to the list as well.I recommend Gustaf's licorice to all licorice lovers.5Love theseI just ordered my third shipment of these coins. That makes 36 bags. I eat about 4 packages a month. Some people says it is bad for my blood pressure, but I haven't noticed any difference. Besides I am almost 80 years old and I will eat what I please. And I love these!5Great introduction to salt licouriceI'm a fan of salt licorice so keep that in mind when reading the following review. The description on the bag say "Dutch Licorice Coins firm with just a hint of salt" I would have to agree - that is a good description. As salt licorice goes it is defiantly on the light side regarding salt. If you a fan of black licorice, this would be an easy introduction to salt licorice. The coins are about an inch in diameter and an 1/8 inch thick. The bit is very firm. You would have difficulty biting through these with one try. It does soften up a bit with time in the mouth but does not break down rapidly. Mildly salty and mildly flavored black licorice.4Delicious Licorice!My husband and I are black licorice lovers. I found this brand at The Country Store in Frankenmuth, MI for $1.99 a bag. I loved this licorice so much and found it on here. I bought twelve bags and the cost per bag was less then $1.99 so I got a good deal. The licorice has that really genuine black licorice flavor and like the bag reads, just a hint of salt. I'm addicted to this licorice.5If I could put 0 , I'd do it. AwfulI read reviews before buying them and I don't know how people say it's delicious , good and such!It's gross, as it's full of dangerous chemicals, such as ammonium chloride and ammonia caramel, plus modified wheat starch which means GMO ingredient, which is probably full of other chemicals and pork's gelatin. I chewed like 2/3 at once and my mouth smelt like if I had drunken some bleach! Seriously!!! I had to drink a lot of water to get rid of that bad taste. I'm a licorice's lover and I missed my very good Italian coins, made with real licorice and 10000 miles away from these ammonia-made ones. One of the grossest candy I'ever eaten in my life. If you want to be healthy, don't get it.There's no return , so I must just throw them in the bin.1I am addicted!I am a lover of black licorice. My husband pointed these out to me on a recent trip to a World Market in California. I really enjoyed them! Classic black licorice flavor with just the right amount of salt. Of course I would fall in love with something I cannot get my hands on where we live in rural Iowa. I was so happy to find them here! I was saving my last few pieces of my original bag until I knew these were on their way to my home. Great price and great quality. Will be ordering again when my new supply starts to run low.5The coins are my favorite black licoriceFirst off, let me start by saying that I discovered these while living in Amsterdam several years ago. The coins are my favorite black licorice. This brand does not disappoint. I have purchased multiple times and each time the package arrives fast and the product inside is fresh and chewy. Just like good muntjes should be. I particularly like the small individualized bags because they keep the product fresher longer and I can stretch out my usage. I have purchased a bulk bag before and by the time I got to the end of the bag the candy started getting harder to chew.5Nope! - not for this black licorice (and anise) fan.Pros - Extremely coin shaped. Delivers on promise to the firm. Also salty as promised. Goes downhill steeply from there in my book.Cons - low black licorice (root) flavor. Almost zero anise flavor (more on this later). Also one of the ingredients is a modified wheat starch which I can taste about as predominately as the other flavors and dislike. The saltiness does not compliment and enhance the sweetness of the candy (like say salted caremel) the saltiness outweighs the sweet.With all that said ... taste is subjective. I understand it there are regional varieties of black licorice (spelling and flavoring). North Americans like myself tend to expect more anise and sweetness. This was made in the Netherlands. Maybe this meets the expectations of people and other regions of the world (I hope it does, and I hope they rate it well.) ... but I'm out.2
