Customer Reviews

Very nicely constructed!I was very impressed with the quality of this magnifying lamp. Optic lens is bright and clear with no distortion. The steel clamp mount is heavy duty and solid. Light is nice and bright, with no flickering I've sometimes seen with fluorescent lights. Spring loaded arm is very stable..... I set it in position, it stays there. As an older guy who does electronic "stuff" as a hobby, my eyes needed a light just like this one for my electronics work bench. Highly recommended!5Lamp is LimpI agree with many other reviewers regarding the weight of the magnifier lamp. It appears a bit much for the support arms. To get everything to hold it's position, you really need to crank down the butterfly nuts. The problem I had was the joint up by the magnifier lamp (the topmost butterfly nut). The lamp has a metallic post that inserts into a metallic spacer that is then squeezed by tightening the butterfly nut. In my case this "spacer" cracked in half and now the lamp is hanging from its power cord and essentially not usable. Up to that point I found the unit to be serviceable but now I need to either MacGyver a solution to the broken part or contribute to our landfill.2Definitely not for people who demand high quality.Worked fine when I first got it, after a while (several months), one of the lower arms broke loose from its lower mount. It was a minor repair, but it did limit the lamp's movement a little. Some time later (a month or so), it broke again in the same spot. Repaired it again. At some point (I forget whether this was before or after the lower arm breaking), the light/lens housing broke where it attaches to the upper pivot assembly. That one required a .... jury-rigged solution, to put it politely. Finally that jury-rigging gave out, shifting things just enough that metal parts inside hit the ballast and shorted it out, putting it out of service entirely.Others have written that the light/lens assembly is loose, and indeed mine had that problem as well.On the plus side, the lens and lamp were quite functional up until it gave up the ghost. If you're on a budget, this magnifier will do okay, but don't expect professional quality or industrial durability. I didn't even get 2 years of use out of it. Also, contrary to the listing, the housing is NOT all-metal -- it is all PLASTIC.3Design flaw - spacer may crack eventuallyHad this six years. Pretty good lamp, as another buyer said you really have to tighten the wing nuts because the lamp is heavy for the support arm. This puts pressure on the space the pin on the lamp inserts into, and like that buyer mine just broke, so I need a replacement or this is now junk. It IS a customer replaceable part if I can find out how to order the part. Also, the clamp is not great for architect tables, where the tabletop is at an angle. Mine has fallen twice or three times in 6 years. The light and magnifier are great, though.3Good for the price, but light tends to flicker after a few months of use. This lamp is one of the reasons why I try not to write a review for anything before I've used it for at least a few months. This lamp started out great - the light was bright, the magnifier was perfect for painting and assembling my minis and it wasn't too hot for me to handle. I was ecstatic because I've gone through several Ott Lites that died on me quickly. I've always had issues with my vision (glasses since 2nd grade, astigmatism, etc.) and this light helped me do things that would otherwise strain the life out of my eyes. However, after about a month or so of use, the light started to flicker. I thought maybe it was just me and that maybe it was because I had moved the arm into a position that was knocking some of the wiring in a way that it didn't want to go (I'm not a technical nor mechanical person at all). It would work in certain positions, but if I tried to move it, it would constantly flicker on and off.Cut to January 2016 (I've owned this lamp since the end of September 2015) and it's flickering all the time. I'll be lucky if I could find a position that won't cause it to flicker. The lamp isn't completely useless (hence the 3 stars) but I just wish that the construction was a little better or at least that there was a way to return it for repairs. I'll probably have my more mechanically-savvy father-in-law look at it at some point. It's a shame, too since I loved this lamp. :(3Good value for price/professional level fit-n-finishI purchased this lamp November 26, 2014- been in "light duty" use for the last 9 months. This is an auxiliary lamp on my desk, in my home office. I use it for specific tasks, so the routine is to turn the lamp on, flip the dust shade up and adjust the lamp down to my sitting position. When I'm through- I push the lamp up and off the the side.** Its important to understand how I use it- to understand how to apply the following:1) The lamp's fit and finish is solid, tolerances are tighter than low budget gadgets, so the lamp moves with a fluid motion and stays put even when I'm adjusting it to its near extremes. This lamp replaced a truly professional grade work light (of similar design), that professional lamp was $165 and lasted perhaps 10 years... until the entire lamp head/magnifier broke at a casted connection (cast aluminum, can't fix it). This lamp is actually superior to its predecessor simply because of the dust cover. If I can get 10 years out of this lamp (which I anticipate), I'm ahead of the game.If you are trying to decide on a task lamp, tired of the functional disappointment the low-dollar lamp brings . . . I think you will be as pleased with this buy as I am.5good craft light with 3x magnificationExcellent light. I use this weekly. My wife now uses it as much as I do. The 3x magnification is nice for fine work like soldering or fine craft work. Bang for the buck, a good buy!5Fantastic task light and magnifier has improved the quality of my life so much! This is a fantastic task light! The magnifying part is high quality -- clear and distortion-free with very good magnification. The lens is surrounded by light, giving you a great, almost spotlit view of what you're doing (see pic). There's a plastic protective cover to keep dust off the lens, and it stays flipped open on its own until you close it.The lamp swings over your lap and then out of the way again very easily, and you can adjust it up and down or closer and further and have it stay where you put it, like a good architect-style adjustable desk lamp. It clips easily to a table edge without damaging the furniture -- I have this clipped to a wooden end table next to my living room chair. It's very solidly attached, but I can easily detach it and take it out if we're having company (the lamp is pretty utilitarian looking, as you can see).I have middle-aged, progressive-lens wearing eyes, and I use this lamp for knitting. It's especially great for dark-colored and/or fine yarn that can be very hard to see, especially in our fairly dark living room -- this is so much better than taking off my glasses and holding the knitting practically up to my eyeballs to see what I'm doing! Fantastic for picking up dropped stitches or edge stitches, running lifelines, mattress stitching, and steeking, all cases where you REALLY need to be able to see EXACTLY what you're doing. Couldn't be happier with this purchase!5DisapointingI am very disappointed in this item. I am an skin care specialist and I purchased this for my treatment room. The arm falls down, no matter how tight you try to turn the little knob. In order to analyze the skin I had to hold the mag lamp, so it doesn't fall on my clients head. Which takes my hands away from actually feeling on my clients skin. I wish I would have returned it sooner because my return window has already closed. And this is the second dissapointing mag lamp I've gotten in a row! The other one light judt died after only a month and used only a couple times... This was a waste of $50 and that hurts as a new business owner.1I love this lampI love this lamp, and my husband does, also. Only problem I've noticed so far is that the springs seem to have lost some of their tension just enough that it is hard to keep the light in certain positions while you are working, but I have started taking the springs off when not in use to see if it helps them last longer. Very awesome lamp, though. Saves my eyes with the magnifier. We may order another4
