Customer Reviews

Pretty good, but mix with a lighter roast. First, my coffee experience; my love for coffee began in Seattle... where I enjoyed great coffee from many different coffee shops (including Starbucks). I began roasting my own coffee about 12 years ago in the quest for a great decaf coffee. I could creat a pretty good roast. Then Amazon Prime came along with valuable ratings, love the system. Now, my rating comments for this coffee. I ordered this coffee because I like dark roasts and the high rating. The roast is certainly on the dark side, most coffee drinkers would say this is burnt (many coffee roasts are, but this is really dark). This roast is burnt more than any Starbucks roast that I have tried.I am now mixing this in with a medium dark roast coffee at a ratio of 30% coffee bean direct coffee and 70% medium dark roast. That mix is 5 star. 4Great flavor My wife and I are really pleased with the quality, taste and aroma of this decaf. We have been drinking espresso decaf for years, and we're quite picky about the flavor. We used to buy our coffee in bulk locally for about $8/lb, but our favorite place stopped carrying it. Most other places charge $12 or more for bulk. So we tried this out, and and were extremely pleased. Now on our 3rd bag, and will continue to buy and recommend. It's strong, but not "burned" flavor, with a hint of nutty. Skip the Starbucks and others which by the way still have a lot of caffeine, even thought they say "decaf". This won't make you jittery, but still packs a blast of flavor for your mornings, or any time of day. 5Not terrible, but not great either. The Coffee Bean Direct decaf is nearly acceptable and at the right price. I had hoped that given the spectacular reviews here that there was more than just hype. Sadly, I feel like shaking my head when I see all of the great reviews - but taste is individual and maybe I just don't get it. :(I was particularly excited for trying this due to the CO2 decaf method. I find the flavors muddy, even when when I am 100% positive that I got the espresso extraction shot perfectly. In order to get a perfect extraction, I find that I need a really fine grind. I think that I may try mixing it with a lighter roast, but I like a good dark roast. This just tastes muddy. :(Don't get me wrong, most decaf is terrible...usuallly undrinkable. This is not that bad. However, there are much better beans out there - though you will pay more for them. 2Wonderful! This is by far my favorite decaf coffee! The CO2 decaf process leaves the coffee with a fantastic flavor. Plus, the chemical process of decaffeinating with CO2 means that there are no chemical residues in the coffee. Lastly, the CO2-decaffeination process is a very thorough, effective process - so I can feel assured that my decaffeinated coffee has very little residual caffeine. But the most important thing is that this coffee is delicious! I brew it numerous times a day. For the cost and the taste, I couldn't be happier. 5Not consistent I am the pickiest coffee snob EVER. When my Doctor told me I couldn't drink coffee unless it was decaffeinated I was determined to find dark rich espresso quality beans. Problem is many roasters use only low quality bean in decaffeinated eans. Starbucks has a &15 per pound espresso bean, sometimes. Over the years they decreased the number of types of decaffeinated beans they sell in their stores and often only blonde roast or even worse pikes place pitiful excuse for coffee is available. Now I don't have to ever go to Starbucks again. This coffee is better than dozens I have tried and as good as or better than the coffee I enjoyed when I lived in Europe. The first two bags were just great after that they just kept seeming to be going less and less quality, not consistent but I might try it again later 2Always fresh, Always good! I love the coffee this company roasts and have been ordering espresso from them a couple of years-always in the 5-lb bag. I always order the beans as I have my own coffee grinder which I also ordered from Amazon (Capresso 560.01 Burr Grinder) which I also love. The CO2 Decaf Espresso is quite good and a bit on the light side. It is a full flavored, low acid espresso and makes great iced & hot espresso. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Decaf Dark Sumatra they carry. It's strong, low acid and is great for iced espresso, which is what I make with it since I'm in a hot climate. I've also made hot espresso with it and it's just as good. I ONLY make decaf, low acid espresso-anything else, causes me to have heartburn, so this is perfect for me. What I really appreciate is the way they market & package the product. It's easy to see if each blend is high or low acid, full bodied or low... Really helps to know what you're getting. 5as I've been getting this decaf espresso via auto-ship for several years now- every 3 months- and have always been completely sa I'm sorry to give a negative review, as I've been getting this decaf espresso via auto-ship for several years now- every 3 months- and have always been completely satisfied. The roast is perfect- nearly black-as espresso should be! The most recent bag, (received Christmas Eve), is a big disappointment. It is barely dark brown. Once ground, my coffee is stored in a airtight black cannister with a black scoop inside. Normally, it's difficult to spot the scoop sitting in the coffee....not with this recent bag!! Unless I receive some sort of explanation or compensation for this "defective" bag, I expect I will cancel my subscription. 1Good medium roast in an Aero Press, but . . . In an Aero Press, ground fine, makes an enjoyable cup. I would say this is a medium roast, maybe right on the line between medium and dark. The beans look dark but the ground coffee and flavor is more medium. The flavor out of the Aero Press is mild, with some hints of rich aftertone flavors, not without interest.Note well however, that in a French press or drip maker, for some reason very little flavor comes through and it's pretty anemic and forgettable, no matter how much grounds you use. I haven't come across too many coffees that have such different results with these different brewing methods.Thing is, I got it for the French press, whole bean in order to grind it fairly coarse. All the store bought decaf in my area (Southern Cal.) is already ground, just hard to find whole bean decaf. My favorite is Peet's decafs, some of them are quite excellent, but they grind them into practically powder. This doesn't work well in a French Press which needs a coarser grind if you hope to be able to press down without a 100lb weight. (A French press is a bit easier if you are making coffee for two or three people, the Aero Press is really a solo cup maker.)So in short for the Aero Press I will probably prefer a darker Peet's or Starbucks Cafe Verona. However this is a perfectly good choice for a more medium roast if are using an Aero Press. 3Velvety, Rich, Dark Sumatran Decaf. FULL of flavor, full of body, but hardly bitter. Do you like the tannin filled richness in a nice Cab Sauv Red? Or the depth of a dark red sweet cherry? IMO this is the coffee version. I often see various coffee descriptions with "chocolate and or Cherry/berry" etc. but then don't get what they are saying. I think you'll actually GET IT ! with this. ( I don't like flavored coffee BTW, that's not what I'm talking about). My wife and I indulge in a Cafe Trebol Costa Rican daily roasted at Market Centrale in San Jose (bring some back for me!) and this Sumatran Decafe after dinner. We use pour over method fresh ground almost espresso to extract as much richness as possible. We are completely satisfied with this purchase and will continue. I'd love to hear YOUR thoughts. 5Hole in the bag. First time ordering from this company. The coffee arrived very quickly but when I pulled the bag out of the shipping box, dead center of the front of the bag was a one inch long, smile shaped hole! Ironically, the hole was right in the middle the company's slogan, "Happiness is Brewing". Also, the outside of the bag looked a little beat up. Not wanting to return it and wait for a replacement, I used my own vacuum sealer to repackage the coffee. I own a food service portion control scale it it appeared that the bag was at least a half an ounce light yet there were no beans in the box so I have to assume the hole in the bag had been there before being boxed up. That's pretty sloppy service.I haven't brewed any yet. If I feel a need I'll post a review of the coffee itself. 3
